Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Client: Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)
TRA created a real estate inventory relational database system with geographic information enhancements for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. This system, known as the “MBTA LandTracker,” is available on a password-protected website to MBTA staff.
Having completed the system in 2000, TRA continues to maintain the data and provide enhancements and updates. Below is a selection of some of the tasks included in the scope of work:
- Created a computerized real estate inventory and database system for one comprehensive, consistent and reliable source of property information for over 3,500 parcels of land
- Automated reporting system to answer public and internal inquiries, thus reducing time and increasing accuracy of responses
- Converted hard copy data into an easily accessible digital format; conversion of valuation plans, leases, photos, and deeds, including scanning and geo-referencing 600 valuation plans and all transit track plans
- Created graphic representation and property ownership tracking for sub-surface MBTA-owned parcels, such as transit stations
- Developed digital data to identify MBTA artworks, power substations, bus shelters and underground storage tanks
- Created a detailed program, including training, to provide Internet access and MBTA property ownership information to MBTA staff
- Created a system that enables the MBTA to be proactive in identifying potential sites for disposition and other revenue-enhancing opportunities
- Coordinated property ownership information with lease records and revenues; established a system for identifying and tracking encroachments, to improve asset management
